The Flag is Flyin'

The Flag is Flyin’

Hello Everyone,

Today is Labor Day 2014 – it’s the first day of September and I feel a dip in the temperature this morning.  I should go for a walk RIGHT NOW, but here I am posting instead.  I can walk a little later.  I may even go to the Gym – but it may be closed today because of the holiday – plus my Gym is at my work and I don’t really want to drive to “work” when I don’t have to.  Although – yesterday I should have gone after church and I didn’t.  But I was close to going :-)!  My – I sure can come up with some great excuses not to go to the gym!

Yesterday we had a great rain storm so my PIA plant got watered by Mother Nature – love that!  But then we lost electricity.  FPL has a great number to call when that happens.  They give you an update of the problem – yesterday it was “weather related” and 350 people were without electricity.  They said it could take up to 4 hours to repair but it was back on after 1.5 hours.  Now my TV has no signal.  I noticed the other night that when I turned it off, the screen turned blue and said “no signal”, but I figured it would work again the next day – it didn’t.  Still no signal.  I texted a friend who works for Comcast to see if he can “walk me through” it, but I don’t even know if that is the kind of work he does for Comcast – worth a shot though.  Anyway, I’ll call them again later and see about getting a service person here today – but it is a holiday.  I just don’t want to have to come home from work again like I did last week for my refrigerator.  I hate those service windows – 2PM to 5PM – it is such a waste of time.

I went to the laundromat yesterday.  I have a big bedspread that I can’t wash in my machine so I go down the street.  Laundromats are an interesting slice of life.  Anyway, I put the soap in the wrong slot and the guy behind the desk was watching me so he came over and told me – he could tell I was out of my element.  Everything in there is in Spanish and I didn’t look at the thing very carefully.  He told me just to pour water in the slot where I put the soap and that worked so the comforter got washed with soap.  I did feel like an idiot though.  But the place was jammed.  People and kids EVERYWHERE – I guess that is what people do on Sundays.  So grateful for my washer and dryer in my own garage!

There was a Dollar Store around the corner so while it was drying I went shopping.  I love the Dollar Store and this one was pretty nice.  I need pens for the Intergroup Meeting on Wednesday so that when we pass out the ticket packets, everyone can write down their information for me.  Then I can get my “grid” set up for tracking the tickets.  So for $2 I got  16 pens – such a deal!

We had a Picnic Wrap Up meeting on Saturday.  We ran about $70 in the red from the picnic.  Now, mind you, this is the 7th Picnic and until last year we never asked for an entrance fee.  So the picnic was always underwritten by Intergroup – so a loss of $70 isn’t so bad.  But you can be assured that someone will take exception to that deficit.  But Lisa did a fantastic job this year and having the door prizes that were donated was a great thing.  So next year, Lisa wants to charge $3 entrance fee.  They want to have tickets to sell at the groups which means they need them by the June Intergroup meeting to sell.  I don’t really want to print tickets for that picnic and the Corrections Picnic and the Gratitude Dinner, so I suggested that we use raffle tickets.  But after thinking about it – always gets me in trouble – I said the tickets should be printed as little raffle tickets would get lost before the event.  But the upside of this is that Lisa wants to learn how to do the tickets.  So this will be a way to slowly get out of this job every year.  I’ve been doing it since 2006 and that is enough – don’t you think?

It was determined this year, that there were a lot of “kids” that got in for free this year.  I didn’t really see them go by our table, so they must have come in from the beach or some other way.  I still need to check with Haven about that – there was a time when I was in the line waiting for food – about 20 minutes- that I wasn’t at the table.  So I’ll text her now while I’m thinking about it.  (Love technology!)

So I’m gonna go do my ironing now.  I do it in my garage and my garage gets too hot as the day progresses so I’m going to do it now.  Have a wonderful day today!
