Good Morning World!

Today is my mother’s birthday!  She would have been 100 today!  Happy Birthday mom!

My mom!

My mom!

I started thinking about this when Dick and I were painting my place on Saturday.  He mentioned my mom and we were trying to figure out when she was born.  I said I thought she was 35 when I was born so that would have been 1915 since I was born in 1950 – I know a lady never tells her age, but what the heck!  Anyway, I started thinking about that and I have a beautiful picture of her in a “ball gown” and I have a nifty scanner at my house so I decided to scan the picture and it turned out great.  Of course I put it on FB this morning for the world to see!  I also put this picture on FB:

My mom was really a wonderful person.  She was the disciplinarian in the house.  Dad was at work and mom had her hands full with 3 kids.  Of course I was the good one and my brothers were the bad ones!  Actually, we had a pretty happy home.  Bill and Jon would fight once in a while and mom would tell them to take it to the back yard so the neighbors wouldn’t hear or see them fighting.  I remember growing up in a neighborhood where you could ride your bike all over town and never worry about anything.  I remember walking to “Albrecht’s Store” and buying candy.   All we needed to do was listen for the “bell” on the back porch and know it was time to come in for dinner.   There was a bird farm at the end of our street across West Avenue where there were peacocks that would crow all day long.  I remember wild pheasant’s coming to our bird feeder in the back yard – the whole family – daddy first then the mother and kids.  And of course I remember our dog Trigger:

I must have been around 5.

I had a pretty normal childhood.  Growing up in Darien, Connecticut was a pretty nice privilege.  It was a white collar town and mostly “white”.  I went to an elementary school named Hollow Tree (it’s an “old folks home” now), then to Junior High School at Middlesex, and on to Darien High School.  Let’s not forget 6th grade at “the Annex”.  That was before they decided what to do with 6th grade and created our “middle schools” now.

It’s also Becky’s birthday.  She is 45 – I could actually be her mother, but let’s not go there.  Here is Becky (in the middle).

Becky is our Activities Director and she does an “outstanding” job!  She is so talented and so creative!  We are so lucky to have her working with us.  It makes my job a lot of fun because I get to hear the activities from my desk and on Fridays at 3:30 there is “music”.  That is the way I get to end my week and day.  I love that program on Fridays and so do our residents.  Becky has some great entertainers booked and there is also the monthly “Birthday Celebration” and the monthly “Cocktail Party”.  Orchid Terrace is really a great place to live and work!

Well, I’ve used up the allotted time this morning – it’s on to work and other things.  Have a great day today and thanks for stopping by!

Happy Birthday, Betty! Mary, I love hearing about your childhood from your point of view. It lines up pretty well with what Bill has told me, but you provide more details…like we women tend to do. Have a great day today!

Glad you enjoy this. I’m doing a lot of “reflecting” these days! Must be zeroing in on 65. Also spending time with Dick is wonderful and nostalgic!

    SHORT STORY
Looking at your mother’s picture, and then her face–closeup–I really “saw” Grace Kelly, “Princess Grace”, when married to Prince Rainier.

Earlier today I had commented on your FB page about your mother, the following words, in part:
“Your mother–as poised, confident, attractive as a queen might appear.”

Hours later (now) I Googled Grace Kelly–wish I could put photos on another’s blog) and here was a description of Grace. almost as I had “painted her” in that Facebook comment–

“…Grace Kelly’s beauty, self-confidence and mystery enchanted the world, and her serenity and poise…” you get the picture?

Oh well–it gave me a little “happy” the coincidence of words used. HA! And on a day I needed a little “happy”. About noon I felt symptoms coming on me of an old ailment. Wasn’t certain until now, but it IS Vertigo–I’ve had it often enough to know. So, cannot go to Ave Maria tonight, cannot go ANYWHERE Just lie in bed while the room–and the world–go round-and-round, even when I close my eyes. Sheeesh!

Not life-threatening–unless I ride Flex(!) and it could be gone by morning, hopefully b/c I, like you. have “places-to-go-and-thing-to-do–grin!

Apologize for using so much space about ME (again!) May the rest of this busy week unfold one piece at a time. It is still a Wonderful World, Mary!
Ummm. thanks for reading this comment. Have a fulfilling day!

I hope that vertigo GOES! I’d HATE that. Hope it never comes my way. God Bless You!
